Kering and Adyen Chart the Future of Luxury Retail: AI, Agentic Commerce, and the Power of Human Experience

***RECAP from the NRF Panel Discussion – June 3, 2026

Luxury retail is experiencing a transformative shift driven by technological innovation, evolving customer expectations, and a renewed focus on operational excellence. Against this backdrop, the NRF APAC 2026 event brought together industry leaders Kering and Adyen, who underscored how the integration of payments, artificial intelligence, and customer experience is shaping the future of intelligent commerce. Both companies emphasised that even as technology transforms the industry, the essence of luxury retail remains rooted in cultivating strong human relationships—ensuring that innovation enhances, rather than replaces, personal connections. This tension between digital progress and human touch sets the stage for Kering's recent initiatives.

Speaking with Roelant Prins, Chief Commercial Officer at Adyen, Vincent Bibonne, Payment Group Manager (China, APAC and AMER) at Kering, discussed how the luxury group transformed payment operations across its 724 stores in 27 marketsBibonne highlighted that throughout this transformation, Kering's primary focus remained on maintaining the seamless, human-led experience expected from brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and Bottega Veneta. This approach illustrates how operational excellence and human-centric values can coexist in luxury retail.

Kering's journey toward a unified, seamless client experience has been marked by a deliberate focus on operational foundations. As the group expanded globally, it faced mounting complexity from fragmented regional payment providers and legacy infrastructure. Rather than simply layering on more technology, Kering made the strategic decision in early 2025 to unify its payment systems across all of its 724 stores and 27 markets through a partnership with Adyen. This consolidation enabled the rollout of over 3,500 terminals and the support of 31 payment methods under a single framework, with real-time visibility across markets. The initiative's true success lies in making payments virtually invisible, empowering store associates to devote more attention to client relationships—the heart of every luxury experience The initiative was designed to streamline operations while allowing store associates to focus more on customer interactions.

"In luxury, excellence is often defined by what the client never notices: no friction, no hesitation, no awkward moment at checkout," said Vincent Bibonne. This quote underscores the group's belief that technology should adapt to the luxury experience, not the other way around reaffirming that human experience remains the true differentiator.

This philosophy also extends to the integration of artificial intelligence and agentic commerce, which are rapidly becoming central to intelligent retail. For Kering, innovation is not about technology for its own sake but about removing friction points that disrupt the selling process. Emerging models like agentic commerce—where AI systems support discovery, purchasing, and decision-making—are being explored to handle orchestration, compliance, and operational tasks behind the scenes. As a result, store associates can remain focused on personal service and emotional connection, while technology operates discreetly in the background, reinforcing the human-centric luxury experience.

As AI becomes more deeply integrated into commerce, issues of trust, governance, and operational control are taking centre stage. The industry continues to evolve around standards for agent-initiated payments, particularly in areas such as authority, accountability, and intent. Ensuring proper oversight will be critical as luxury brands seek to balance innovation with their commitment to excellence.

Looking ahead, Kering's strategic priorities are clear: strengthening omnichannel infrastructure, enabling responsible personalisation, and linking payments closely to loyalty, satisfaction, and long-term customer engagement. In summary, the future of luxury retail will depend on striking the right balance between innovation and the enduring power of human relationships. As Bibonne concluded, "What we are really building is not a technology platform. We are building the ability to deliver excellence consistently across brands, countries, and every client interaction."
